Participate – 2017

The National Folk Festival is not just about concerts. There many opportunities for you to get involved. Below is the current list of participatory activities for the 2017 Festival. Further announcements will be made pre Australia Day. You should also check out Dance, Workshops and Community Arts for many more ways to immerse yourself and, also check out some of the activities under Mind Body Spirit.

web_auslan Auslan Choir

Karen Kyriakou and deaf choir leader Trudy Fraser will lead an all-inclusive session of signed song, delving into the expressive world of Auslan (Australian Sign Language). No previous signing experience is necessary and these sessions will suit both the skilled and the curious.

web_bushtraditions Bush Traditions Settler Sessions

Led by active players and collectors interested in passing on Australia’s musical heritage these sessions feature the music of Australia’s setters and their descendants and are presented in an informal and approachable manner. Bring an instrument and play along or just sit and listen.

Concertina ConvergenceSm Concertina Convergence

The Concertina Convergence is an opportunity for players from across Australia to gather and share their music and enthusiasm for concertinas. Events include workshops and sessions, an historical presentation and a concert.

Discover why Dru Yoga is so effective as a tool for transformation. De-stress with fun activations and a soothing energy block release sequence. Then stretch and energise through uplifting yoga poses that will increase your health and well-being, followed by a rejuvenating relaxation.

bush-orchestra Festival Bush Orchestra

Join musicians from all around the country in the Festival Bush Orchestra and share the joy of playing collected tunes in four-part arrangements. Under the baton/stockwhip of Dave Johnson you will be surprised at the magic, the warmth and the sheer fun. Participants will be working towards a performance in the Trocadero.

_DSC1650 Festival Fiddle Rally

Join other fiddlers from around Australia to experience the Fiddle Magic of playing a range of Celtic-based tune sets in a 60-piece+ ensemble. Three rehearsals will conclude with a stunning performance on the Budawang stage at the end of the Festival. If you want to practice in advance here’s the link to all the tunes.

Good Tunes Session_Sm Good Tunes Session

David De Santi has been accumulating ‘good’ tunes for over 30 years and wants to share them! Be ready for a musical tour around Australia, Italy, Quebec, Scotland, Scandinavia, Spain, France, Ireland, England and beyond!

hatha-yoga Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is a universal style of yoga, suitable for most fitness levels. A series of standing and seated sequences are used to guide the body through its full range of movement, with a focus on mindfulness and breathing practices. Judith is an experienced yoga teacher with recent international training.

Melbourne Maypolers_Sm Melbourne Maypolers

The Melbourne Maypolers have taught and presented maypole dancing demonstrations around Melbourne for more than 10 years giving dancers a fun introduction to maypole dancing and the satisfaction of producing visually complex ribbon patterns with quite simple movements.

SmNFF Percussion Experience (Peter Vadiveloo) NFF Percussion Experience

Dynamic percussionists and teachers Peter Vadiveloo, Bella Vadiveloo and Belinda Haydon will run four fun rehearsals to create a magical percussion piece for this year’s Finale concert. These three presenters have run numerous Percussion Experience workshops around Australia for years.

Roger Holmes & Beautiful Assistant Roger Holmes and his Beautiful Assistants

Roger and his Beautiful Assistants have a love of communal singing that they share with all comers. There is no mouthing the words for fear somebody might hear you when everybody is in full voice, especially when the regulars are so welcoming to strangers and newcomers.

saplings Saplings Bush Music Sessions

In this participatory experience young musicians and would-be musicians aged 8-16 will learn some great tunes with experienced mentors. Bring acoustic instruments or use those provided. Beginners, intermediate and experienced welcome.

Songs in the Australian Tradition continues the celebration of Australian songs established at the National by the late Dennis O’Keeffe—singer/songwriter and longtime mate of the NFF. It’s an open invitation to come along each day and sing great Australian songs!
